Theology of the Icon 2 vols By Leonid Ouspensky
The Theology of the Icon includes more than the basic theory
of the transfiguration of beauty and the sanctification of art. It is a
fundamental element in the entire body of Orthodox Tradition. In this
two-volume work, Leonid Ouspensky provides the reader with a deep and
serious approach to the mystery of the sacred image. He surveys the
development of the sacred art of the Christian East from its beginnings
in catacomb art through the iconoclastic controversy of the eighth and
ninth century. Drawing especially on the Russian Orthodox tradition,
the author studies a large number of texts with care and in great
detail. He includes an analysis of the flowering of early Russian
iconography, tracing its later development and the state of the art
today. The 51 black and white photo illustrations, along with the
four-panel foldout and six color plates, will enable the reader to
appreciate the Orthodox icon with an informed mind and open heart.
This
is the most comprehensive introduction available to the history and
theology of the icon, and is the standard text upon which most modern
studies of iconography are based. Volume I, originally published in
1978, has been updated by the author and contains large sections of new
material.

The Russian Masterwork Icon Series represents a breakthrough in icon-crafting, utilizing the latest silk-screen technology. When people see these icons for the first time, their typical reaction is "What beautiful hand-painted icon!"
The unique creative process behind these icons was developed by one of Russia's premier icon studios. Seeing the desire of pious Orthodox Christians for high-quality hand-painted icons in the traditional canonical style, and knowing that the demand for such icons could never be met by the small number of trained iconographers, a master iconographer developed this new technique, whereby some of the most beloved ancient types are applied using dozens of different layers of mineral paint to a solid wood board, fully one inch thick with kovcheg. Metallic foil is applied and hand-worked. The icon is then embellished with halos and lettering, and trimmed in deep red.
The result is an exquisite image with the real living character of a hand-painted icon, one that any praying person would be honored to have in their icon corner.
Jesus Christ, The Lord Over All
Our Great God and Saviour Jesus Christ is depicted with His right hand raised in blessing. This is Christ as the Lord of All (Pantocrator)
at the end of the ages. His nimbus bears within it a Cross with the
words "HE WHO IS." This is a title for God and signifies Christ's
deity. His cloak is blue to symbolize His humanity which He put on in
His Incarnation and His tunic is red to represent His divinity that He
always had from eternity.
And behold I come quickly; and my
reward is with me to give every man according as his work shall be. I
am Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end the first and the last.

Protection of the Mother of God
In the tenth century in Constantinople during an All Night Vigil,
the Fool-for-Christ, St. Andrew, lifted up his eyes towards the heavens
and beheld our most Holy Lady Theotokos surrounded by an assembly of the
Saints, entreating Her Son, Jesus Christ, to accept the prayers of all
the people looking for Her protection. Once Her prayer was completed,
She spread Her veil over all the people in the church as a protection.
